Definition

Rizz refers to someone's ability to charm or attract a romantic interest through charisma, confidence, and smooth conversation. It can be used as a noun ("he has rizz") or a verb ("he rizzed her up"). Oxford named it the 2023 Word of the Year, defined as "style, charm, or attractiveness; the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner."

Origin & History

Rizz was coined by Twitch streamer Kai Cenat and his friends in 2021-2022. The word is believed to be a shortening of "charisma." Kai Cenat used it frequently on his streams when discussing dating and flirting, and his massive audience quickly adopted the term.

The word exploded on TikTok in 2022-2023, with videos analyzing people's "rizz" going viral. Clips of people successfully (or unsuccessfully) flirting became categorized by their level of rizz.

Several variations emerged:

  • W Rizz: Winning/successful rizz
  • L Rizz: Losing/failed rizz (being awkward)
  • Unspoken Rizz: Attracting someone without even trying or speaking

In December 2023, Oxford University Press crowned "rizz" as the Word of the Year.

How to Use It

Rizz can be used in multiple ways:

  • As a noun: Describing someone's charm level
  • As a verb: The act of charming someone
  • With modifiers: W rizz (good), L rizz (bad), unspoken rizz

Examples

"Bro has infinite rizz, he got her number in 30 seconds."

"Watch me rizz her up real quick."

"That was L rizz, she walked away immediately."

"He didn't even say anything. That's unspoken rizz."
